Planning a Circumcision Ceremony

The circumcision ceremony is a traditional family celebration in Turkey, and the only one with a child at its centre. That gives it a priority the others do not have: however well the programme is built, the evening ends when the child is tired. Most of the planning takes shape around that fact.

Timing

The ceremony is usually held in the summer months while schools are closed: relatives travel more easily, and the recovery does not fall in term time.

Whether the celebration comes before or after the procedure varies between families. Holding it a few days beforehand is becoming more common, because the child is then comfortable, rested and able to take part in the programme.

Venue and programme

A hall, a garden or the family home are the three common options. Families with long guest lists tend towards a hall; a garden is a comfortable middle ground in summer.

Building the programme around the child's daily rhythm matters. Moving the liveliest part to the start of the evening means the moments that matter happen before tiredness sets in.

Guest list and invitation

Guest lists for these ceremonies are wide and usually cover the whole extended family, which means the list keeps growing until the last minute.

The child's name, the date, the time and the location of the venue are enough on the invitation. Because knowing how many people are coming determines the catering and the seating, collecting RSVPs inside the invitation itself makes the job easier.

The ceremony sometimes falls on the same day as a memorial reading or a dinner. If there are two separate programmes, multi-event designs carry a separate time, location and RSVP question for each.

Preparing the child

This is the most frequently skipped part of the planning. A few practical points:

  • Explain what will happen in language suited to their age, in advance — keeping it as a surprise makes the fear bigger.
  • Try the outfit on beforehand — clothes worn for the first time on the day are usually uncomfortable.
  • Invite one or two friends of a similar age — so the evening is not made up entirely of adults for them.
  • Leave a gap for rest between the parts of the programme.
