How to Plan a First Birthday
A first birthday is really the family's celebration, not the baby's. The baby will not remember the day; what will be remembered are the photographs and the people who were there. Planning around that fact leads most families to the kindest decision they can make: keeping the programme short.
The hour decides everything
The most common mistake at first birthdays is choosing an evening slot. A one-year-old is at their brightest after the morning nap; the late afternoon is when the fussiness starts.
What works in practice is planning around the end of the daytime nap and capping the whole thing at two hours. The longer it runs, the more it turns into a picture of a crying baby and parents who cannot attend to their guests.
The guest list
The list splits in two: family, and friends with children. The second group sets the tone — if there are other children you need a play area, and if there are not, the party becomes entirely adult conversation.

Being precise about the time matters more at a first birthday than at other events. A guest arriving half an hour late misses the cake moment, because the programme is short.
