How to Plan an Engagement Party

An engagement is a smaller ceremony than a wedding and planned in a shorter window. That is exactly why the preparation tends to compress into the last two weeks, with the same questions coming up in every family: who is invited, and when do the rings go on.

Promise ceremony or engagement?

In Turkish practice these are two separate occasions, though they are often combined. The promise ceremony is the small gathering where the two families meet and announce the decision; the engagement is where the rings are exchanged, with a wider guest list.

Many families now hold both on the same day. When that happens, saying clearly on the invitation which ceremony is taking place helps: guests choose their outfit and their gift accordingly.

Date and venue

The usual options are a home, a restaurant or a small hall. A home engagement is warmer but demands a realistic guest count; a hall gives you flexibility on numbers at the cost of some intimacy.

Leaving at least a few months between the engagement and the wedding is a common choice. If the two are very close together you are inviting the same group twice in quick succession, and attendance drops.

Guest list and invitation

Engagement lists are narrower than wedding ones: close relatives from both sides and close friends. Having each family prepare its own list before merging them noticeably reduces the number of forgotten names.

Two weeks is enough notice for most engagements. Because the list changes until the last moment, a digital invitation helps here: sending the same link to a late addition is all it takes, with no reprinting.

The running order

Engagement ceremonies commonly follow this sequence:

  • Welcoming guests and refreshments.
  • The couple's entrance.
  • Exchanging the rings and cutting the ribbon that joins them.
  • A few words from the family elders.
  • Cake, music and the open part of the evening.

Frequently overlooked points

Three things are most often left to the last day:

  • Not deciding who will put the rings on — settling it during the ceremony breaks the flow.
  • Not giving the photographer an exact ceremony time — the ring moment is the most commonly missed shot.
  • Guessing the headcount — catering and seating depend on it, so collect the answers in advance.
