How to Plan a Baby Shower
The baby shower has settled into a recognisable format: a small guest list, daytime hours and a gift-led programme. It is quick to plan, but a few decisions are worth making at the start.
When is it held?
The usual choice is the seventh or eighth month of pregnancy. That window makes sense in two ways: the mother-to-be still moves comfortably, and there is enough time left before the birth for the gifts to be useful.
Leaving it later is risky, since an early birth can upset the plan. Holding it too early leaves the gift list vague.
Who organises it, and who is invited?
Traditionally a close friend or sister of the mother-to-be takes on the organising. It is unusual for her to plan her own party, but the date and the guest list are always decided together with her.
The list stays narrow: close friends and family. A crowded party breaks the intimate tone. Mixed baby showers, with men attending, are now common too — that should be stated on the invitation, because the expectation is different.
Programme and games
Two or three hours is enough for most parties. A common sequence:
- Welcome and refreshments.
- One or two games — guessing the baby's name, measuring the bump.
- Opening the gifts.
- Cake and photographs.
Gift list and invitation
The gift list is the most practical part of a baby shower. Sharing what the mother-to-be actually needs prevents the same present arriving three times, and sending the list with the invitation is the simplest way to do it.
The invitation carries the date, time, location and, if there is one, the theme colour. Since the headcount determines the catering and the game supplies, collecting the answers inside the invitation makes planning easier.
If the baby's sex has not been announced yet, the gender reveal and the baby shower can be combined into one invitation; in that case showing the two parts separately in the programme keeps things clear for guests.
